Sometimes the lyrics are violent on the surface, but Johnson always delivers them with such nonchalant sweetness that you don't think anything of such lines as, 'If I broke my jaw for you I'd find a bloody tooth and pull it out.'

Eric Johnson and Gillian Lisee made up Fruit Bats circa 2003.The music is equally dreamy — not snoozy, mind you, but it's easy to get lost in it. When it's over, there are lucid melodies that will stick in your head while others parts will seem like hazy memories. The mostly acoustic instrumentation and sunny harmonies are occasionally sprinkled with some electronic tinkering, but it never sounds the least bit out of place. Johnson, now based in Seattle, spent most of 2007 and '08 as the fifth member of The Shins, but currently he is back to focusing on Fruit Bats and is working on a fourth album. Some of my favorite Fruit Bats songs are off their other two albums, but 'Mouthfuls' achieves a cohesiveness that makes it more than a collection of pretty songs.
