So this is a problem I've been having for a little while, and I'm finally bringing it to you guys to see if anyone else has had the same issue. When creating raster separations in Photoshop, I separate in Channels, output a DCS 2.0.EPS file, import into Illustrator onto a Registration template, then print my separations. However, occasionally one of my separations won't print.

I haven't noticed any sort of pattern, and when I open my DCS 2.0 file, the separation is there, and it is recognized in Illustrator. But when I print it out, the image is blank. It prints all the information, just no image. The only way I can remedy the issue is to open my DCS 2.0 file, delete all the other channels, save as a new file, then import this file back into Illustrator and print the single separation. It's not a huge issue, but it does cause me to waste film occasionally, which is never good. Has anyone else seen/experienced this issue?

Any suggestions for a solution? I'll include some more details about my set-up in the comments. Thanks in advance! Could be, my job experience is far more offset than screen shops so my perspective comes from there, and we haven't regularly used DCS files since the days of drum scanning.

Why don't you print seps directly from PS to AccuRip rather than going through AI? Have you updated anything lately? It could be just a bad communication between PS, AI or AccuRip. Check for all updates for everything in the chain from inception to final positive. Edit: I see why DCS2.0 came back to screen printing: Adobe removed the ability to output spot seps with halftones from index files around CS5.0. DCS2.0 allows for spot channels rather than index channels, an important distinction and one that works with Illustrator (and I assume InDesign). No updates have been made since the initial set-up of the system, however, this problem has been happening the entire time.

90% of the jobs go through perfectly, but on occasion it will just ignore one of the spot channels. Like I said before, my registration template will still print, but where the image should be printing is completely blank. The separation is visible when I import the DCS2.0 file into Illustrator, so the error must be happening in AccuRip, but I'm not getting any sort of errors in the program that I can see that would explain why one separation would be ignored. The only warning I'm getting from AccuRip is the following: eFileTypePostscript%%[ ProductName: ]%% ( Warning: Job contains content that cannot be separated with on-host methods.

To resolve, I open up the DCS2.0 files I created and delete all the spot channels besides the one that won't print, so its the only one remaining and resave the file (with a new file name, so I don't lose my original separation). I then click the DCS2.0 file that was imported into Illustrator, click Relink. And select the new DCS2.0 file I created.
