Inside the oval, Savage stamped the letter 'A' together with other numbers which are apparently inspector's numbers. On many Model 99 rifles, this “oval” is indistinct or difficult to read as are the letters and numbers inside the oval. On my own late model “EG”, serial #709XXX, made in 1953, only the upper case letter “E”.

Is there any information available regarding use of serial numbers to help determine year of manufacture of Savage firearms. In my case I am thinking specifically of the modern Favorite copies.meaning the Model 71, 72, 74, and the 30G models including all three calibers. And, I remember a few years ago. Answer     If you mean who bought it and used it, when and where, this information is just not available for the normal firearm. At best, there may be manufacturer's records that will indicate the date (or at least the year) of manufacturer.

Springfield Research Center has searched records in the National Archives and identified many records of guns that were issued to, inventoried by, or disposed of by, various military units, and the results of their research are available for a fee. Cody Museum in Wyoming has records of most Winchester rifles which usually only indicates the dates manufactured and shipped and the shipping destination, usually a wholesaler but occasionally a special order from a famous individual. These records will also tell the original configuration if it was different than standard. These Winchester letters are very expensive. There is a similar service for Colt firearms and (I think) Smith and Wesson. Some similar information is available for older Stevens firearms from a private historian who owns the factory records.
