Welcome to the forum. What you are experiencing is the same with any software. The natural progression!!! Looking at the for 2011 you have to remember that Windows 8 just came out and 2011 Inventor is only going to be supported by Autodesk for maybe another year. So one is on its way in and the other on its way out. With Solidworks it isn't any different.

I last used 2011 SW and at that time I remember hearing rumblings of 2012 being the last version to support XP. In fact, it was being said that SW was changing thier kernal. Take a look at their and you will see it is no different. Now if you think what Autodesk is doing is bad try that on for size. That is a completely new PC required.

Hi Guys, Here's how I got my inventor 2011 to work with windows 8.1 Initially I also got the error message that said The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142) This is for windows 8.1 pro 64 bit.( Don't know if it works for other versions of windows.) Download and install service pack 1 and 2. Then look for a hotfix under the 2011 inventor patches that says the following. • After this it should work, I've tried it on my laptop and home computer and it worked both times. Here is the links.
