It is not an easy product to use in my opinion. It will take a while to learn how to use it well. That is of course very true. However over at there are tutorials that cover just about anything you may want to do. And like any other software tool, once you get your head around the way that AE 'thinks' you'll find it a breeze. I use Avid Media Composer in my day job, but I tend to do most of my complex titling, effects or compositing in After Effects.
I find it's quicker and more flexible than the comprehensive set of dedicated plug-ins in Media Composer. Reading the rest of this post may discourage you! It goes into the processes I used in my example on the previous page. The bottom line in my opinion really is: if you're going to be successful in this field there is one powerful tool you really need to learn to use. It's free, too.
It's the one between your ears. Hone your problem solving skills. In the example I quoted earlier both Avid and Boris Fx could have possibly got close. I would have probably used a combination of Avid scratch removal, Avid paint, and the BCC noise reduction and cleanup tools. With enough tinkering the result may have been quite acceptable. However analysis of what really was happening in each shot led me to believe there were some shots that I could do a complete background replacement on, some that I could fix with a simple background blur, others that one of the plug-ins would fix, and the worst case shots that required individual frame by frame removal using paint and clone tools. Because the shots were all hand held I also made use of the motion track tool to keep the background replacements in register. F1 Challenge 99 02 Setups Gaming.
I added grain to the background plates when I composited them to match the natural noise on the original pictures, too. Finally, because there was often a practical light in the edge of shot, I added a little flare, tracking that light. The flare was added to hide any remaining discrepancies. As I said, the whole process took a week for the three minute clip. So the first thing to do is analyse what you're really seeing. Once you've done that and understand even a limited toolset the rest is easy.
